Vincent van Gogh – Almond Blossom

Almond blossoms were one of van Gogh’s favourite subjects.  The stunning beauty of their early spring flowers signified hope and the start of new life. This painting was a gift for his brother, Theo, upon the birth of Theo's son, Vincent Willem, in 1890. In the letter announcing the new arrival, Theo wrote: “As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and as courageous as you.”

Unsurprisingly, this work remained close to the hearts of the van Gogh family. Vincent Willem went on to found The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam where Almond Blossom hangs today.

Van Gogh was greatly influenced by Japanese print making which, as in Almond Blossom, focuses in on details from nature.  He painted the branches from below and closeup. It is as if you are lying on your back on the grass, looking at the branches directly above you, so you can no longer see the entire tree.
